In addition to being a lifelong martial artist, he attended Western University in London, ON and graduated with a BA in English and a MA in Education. After graduation, he took a teaching position with the university and trained part time while fighting at the amateur level. At the prompting of his trainers, he quit his job after only one year, began training full time, and made his professional debut shortly thereafter.
